Food poisoning in Matale leaves one schoolgirl dead

(Colombo Lankapuvath February 13) A school child in the Matale Education Zone died due to food poisoning.

It was reported that 89 others from the area were admitted to the Matale Base hospital with symptoms of food poisoning after they consumed the noon meal of noodles and eggs provided by the schools on Thursday.

Forty-one students have left the hospital after treatment.

The students admitted to the hospital showed symptoms of fever, vomiting, headache and diarrhoea and were. They were from Buddhaghosha Vidyalaya, Kavatayamuna Maha Vidyalaya and Dombawela Sri Rahula Vidyalaya in Matale.

The deceased school girl is Kavishka Dhanajani Gamage, a grade four student of (10) of Buddhaghosha Vidyalaya. The majority of students admitted to the hospital were girls.

It was also revealed that all three schools were supplied the noon meal by a single food supplier.

Central Province Chief Minister and Education Minister Sarath Ekanayake has directed Provincial Education authorities to cancel the contract of the food supplier immediately and conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

Matale Magistrate Saliya Perera ordered the supplier to be taken in to custody and has also ordered to conduct an autopsy on the deceased
